The friends of Elaine & Keith are uniting to raise money to help them pay for medical expenses during their three-year retreat.

Elaine Jackson and Keith Emmons started a three-year retreat at the beginning of 2011. Keith has been ill for much of the retreat. (See below for information from Elaine about his illness.) After a series of expensive medical tests, the doctor prescribed expensive medicine. As you can imagine, he and Elaine are unable to pay the medical bills since they are in retreat and only saved enough money to take care of their regular living expenses.

Elaine and Keith are dedicated practitioners who have studied the Dharma for many years and are now putting those precious teachings into practice through a traditional three-year retreat in order to benefit all beings. Lama Zopa Rinpoche wrote the following about the benefits of retreat: “What you are doing is the real, ultimate solution for world peace, not only global peace but also for all countless universes, for all sentient beings...Doing retreat means you’re making war with your inner enemy—delusions, to conquer them, which have defeated you from beginningless samsaric rebirths, from time without beginning...Therefore, it is extremely worthwhile spending time with your precious human life to make war with the inner enemies, to defeat them, no matter how difficult it is, no matter how many lifetimes or eons it takes.” (from the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive)

Please join us in helping Keith and Elaine by contributing to this fundraiser for their medical expenses.

If you have any questions, please email Valerie Thomas at If you would like to send a donation by mail (which saves the website processing fee), your check should be made payable to Elaine Jackson and sent to Fabienne Pradelle, PO Box 2364, Boulder Creek, CA, 95006.

Information from Elaine: Keith was being treated for lung congestion before we entered retreat and we thought he was well. As it turned out, there was a bacterial infection in his bronchial tubes. It was treated with three months of antibiotics which helped some, but did not cure it. Following more tests (CT Scans, X-rays, blood work), a fungal infection was diagnosed and he is now taking this very expensive anti fungal medication ($3,300 for six weeks worth). A friend donated money to pay for the initial tests. But Keith will need to have more tests to ensure that the infection is really cured, which could easily cost several more thousand dollars.

We have no savings. We live on our small social security payments. Unfortunately, Keith is too young for Medicare and does not qualify for other programs. He applied for Medi-Cruz, but his income is $100 over the monthly limit. In order to receive Medi-Cal, he would need to be disabled. We have tried to keep the costs at a minimum by requesting special low income rates and we have been successful in receiving some discounts. But basically, the bottom line is that we don't have the money for medical expenses.

Leaving retreat to go to work is not an option. We will stay in retreat whatever that entails. Thank you so very much for your kindness.
