The family and friends of Katie Royer are uniting to raise money to help Katie pay for treatments & surgery for Crohn's Disease. Thank you!
On October 12th, 1996, Katie was diagnosed with Crohn's disease after several years of symptoms.
Katie has since endured over 16 years of medical interventions that have wrecked havoc on her body. Now, after her most recent trip to University of Chicago after a troubling colonoscopy, she learned her body is too scarred and exhausted to continue medical therapy.
Her disease is so severe at this point that it is life threatening and surgery in Albuquerque is impossible because we do not have the type of specialized technology that Chicago has. University of Chicago is the leading center for research and treatment of Crohn's disease. She has a very good doctor who regularly confers with her wonderful doctor in New Mexico. The surgery offered in Chicago will offer safeguards that will take into account all the risk factors.
The surgery will completely remove the large intestine, part of the small intestine and other digestive sections. For a full physical recovery, Katie needs about 3 months of life altering modifications as she teaches her body to absorb nutrients and water again, and her muscles and organs adjust to the alteration.
As you can imagine, this unexpected family crisis will take quite a toll on Katie, emotionally and financially. Katie has not been working at her job long enough to qualify for catastrophic leave which would allow her to continue to receive a pay check to cover many crucial expenses- like her mortgage. It is important to have a home to come home to! She also will not have full insurance coverage since the surgery will be out of state, and does not qualify for any programs (such as disability) as of now.
We know Katie loves her friends and family immensely and would love to hear from you. Please send any cards or well wishes to Paul & Beth's home address.
