In line with his beliefs and values, we are changing Ryan's formula to a non-gmo whole food mixture. We are raising $ to cover the costs

Dear Friends,

Ryan Concannon was riding his bicycle on Sept 21, 2012, when he fell and sustained a serious head injury. He was airlifted to the hospital, and after emergency brain surgery placed in the ICU. His family flew to his side to support him through his recovery and are with him every minute, sharing their love and energy with him as strongly as possible. They have decided to focus their energy on getting him well. 'Team Ryan' soon became their mantra.

Throughout the past few weeks Ryan's family have been attempting to change his tube feed formula to a whole foods based mixture to give him the best chance of recovery. Ryan was on a standard formula (Jevity 1.5) comprised of GMO corn syrup, corn oil, canola oil, soy protein and a bunch of additives. I recall many conversations with Ryan regarding his disdain for all of the aforementioned ingredients. Ryan's passion for real food and nutrition is one of his most defining characteristics. Ryan is also extremely intelligent and while chatting at the bakeshop, we have actually had technical conversations about standard tube feed formulas. I can recall one of Ryan's idealistic remarks being "Why would anyone EVER give that crap to any patient?"

As his friend and a registered dietitian I was compelled to assist in changing Ryan's nutrition source in any way possible. With the guidance of Dr. John Apsley and another (anonymous at this point) hospital dietitian, we formulated a non GMO, functional formula with a superior nutritional profile that will promote healing and regeneration. Using an "alternative" custom formula is NOT THE NORM and has only been done a handful of times. It has been a long road working with the hospital and it seems that we are in process of introducing our new real food mixture this week! The cost of procuring ingredients for this formula is approximately $1000 per week. Unfortunately, this formula cost will not be covered by medical insurance and this is why we are asking for your help! Please help feed Ryan with food that is consistent with his values and beliefs.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Lampel MS,RD
