I never knew what it felt to have a truly broken heart until this Valentine’s Day. It was the day we learned that my brother, Allen, has cancer. Just one week before my heart had grown so much larger and stronger with the birth of Allen and Laura’s first child, Sierra Rose Losh.
Allen has been a fighter all his life. First, he had to fight against me, his competitive, sidekick sister! Then it was fighting fires and responding to medical aids for the Healdsburg community. Most recently, he served and fought for his country in the United States Army, which included two tours in Iraq.
Now Allen, at just age 29, is fighting for his life, and as a community he needs us to fight with him. Allen’s rare form of cancer called Signet Ring Carcinoma of the stomach quietly spread throughout his abdominal region before really announcing itself once it got to Stage IV. Now that Allen knows, he is ready to go to battle against this cancer and resume his life as a full time student , friend, son, brother, husband and most importantly new father.
Prior to this unexpected setback, Allen was a full time student pursing a degree in Outdoor Education. In addition, he was working part time for California Alpine Guides as a Lead Trekking Guide as well a reserve firefighter with the Healdsburg Fire Department.
Allen has always loved being outdoors. He recently explained to me, “When we were kids, we always looked up at the mountains. I always wanted to be on top of the mountain looking down.” With this in mind, we created the slogan, Climbing over Cancer. And we are asking for your help.
Although his veterans benefits cover some of the treatment, he's not able to work, and they have a new baby to support. To help offset these financial burdens and on behalf of Allen, I am fundraising and training for the craziest rock climbing adventure of my life! With the help of the California Alpine Guides director, I will rock climb Matterhorn Peak in the Sawtooth Range, of the Sierra Nevada!* You can follow Allen’s road to recovery and my rocky adventure here, on twitter
And remember, before you forward this story on to your friends, make sure to donate!
