The family and friends of Kevin Swenson and Claudia Whitney are uniting to help support them in this time of need. Please show your support.

Kevin Swenson went into the hospital on December 15 of 2011 complaining of severe pain in his abdomen. The doctors discovered Kevin had a perforated gall bladder and performed the first two of what would become many surgeries Kevin endured.

Kevin was released from the hospital and less than a week later, he was taken back to the hospital and diagnosed with sepsis. Sepsis is a severe illness in which the bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria.

Kevin's prognosis continued to worsen day-by-day. As of today, Kevin has been in-hospital for three straight weeks with no improvement in his condition.

On Wednesday, January 25, Kevin was transported to a larger hospital where he has undergone two surgeries in an effort to clean the bacteria from his organs.

Currently Kevin is in critical condition, in ICU and on life support while specialists continue to diagnose this rare form of bacteria that his body is struggling to fight.

By his side, day-in, day-out, as she is in life, Claudia Whitney has held his hand, prayed and stood watch over Kevin.

As many of you may know, Kevin Swenson has been a Monument Police Officer for 34 years. Claudia serves as Deputy Town Clerk for the Town of Monument. They have served this community, selflessly, for a combined total of more than 50 years. Both are pillars of the community, the kind of people everyone turns to when they need something—and neither Claudia or Kevin knows the meaning of the word "no."

Claudia has been away from her job at Town Hall throughout this ordeal taking care of Kevin. Kevin's family, his mother and sister, are in town staying at a hotel so they can be by Kevin's side.

As you can imagine, this unexpected family crisis will take quite a toll on the combined families, emotionally and financially. Claudia has used up the majority of her sick and vacation time as she needs to be at the hospital around the clock.

The family needs our help. There are expenses for hotels and meals, along with day-to-day expenses that we all live with—mortgage, utilities and gas to get the family to and from the hospital every day.

What can you do to help? Please consider making a donation through Give Forward, donate to the Swenson-Whitney Medical Fund at ENT Fed CU acct # is 575790 or, if you are an employee of the Town of Monument, you can donate some of your vacation and/or sick time directly to Claudia.

Several Christmas's ago the police chaplains Dan and Angela Robbins asked Kevin to make a large star to go in their yard. Not to be outdone, Claudia wanted one as well. As a tribute to her dear Kevin, starting January 29th, that star will be illuminated until Kevin is home.

While Kevin cannot have visitors, the family is in the waiting area daily. They have a frame for anyone who wants to stop by and sign it so Kevin knows who has been there on his road to recovery. He also is using a lot of blood in his recovery if anyone would like to donate in his name you can at Penrose Main Hospital. Thanks to you all.

We know Kevin and Claudia love their friends and family immensely and would love to hear from you. Please send any cards or well wishes to their home address, which is 463 Washington Street, Monument, CO 80132.
