The family and friends of Carol Raimondi are uniting to help raise funds to help with medical costs related to her Congenital Heart Defects.

My name is Carol Raimondi. I am a 36 year old living with complex congenital heart defects and am a stroke survivor. Thoughout my journey, I have had four open heart surgeries, the first at 5 years old and the most recent at age 31. I have needed a pacemaker since I was 6, and have undergone many other surgical procedures in between. Also, I have had 2 strokes and several TIA's (mini-strokes). This year, so far,I have already been hospitalized twice. The first time was due to heart failure, and then in February I had a stroke. I have always tried to remain strong despite the obstacles that I face on a daily basis.
I always do my best to live my life as normal as my body will allow me to. I am married and have a beautiful 12 year old daughter. I am a registered nurse, but have been on disabilty for that last 6 years, due to frequent hospitalizations and ongoing health issues. This was not only difficult financially, but was very hard emotionally, as being a nurse always meant so much to me and I loved what I did with a passion. I have found ways to still help others despite my limitations. I serve on Elmhurst Memorial Hospital’s Patient and Family Advisory Council as co-chairperson and also serve as an adult liason for Mended Little Hearts of Chicago. Being able to talk and interact with parents whose children have congenital heart defects is so rewarding to me. I can share my experiences with them and they can see that I am able to have a somewhat normal life at 36 years old, despite my health, and that gives them hope for their own children.
Due to the complexity of my heart condition, my cardiologist is at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. We usually go there once or twice a year. I also see my local physicians once or twice a month and have to have my blood drawn weekly. Like so many others, we struggle to make ends meet, and also have over $20,000 in medical bills. I am returning to Mayo Clinic at the end of this month to evaulate a possible decline in my hearts’ muscle function. Unfortunately, due to my outstanding balance with the clinic, I need to bring at least $1000 with me in order to have the necessary testing and appointments . I am usually not one to ask for others help, but I am now in a situation where I must use all the resources I can to able to get the care I need. My family and friends have always been a huge source of strength for me.
Please help us in any way you can. Even by just sharing this page with your friends, family, and co-workers, you are helping me. In doing this, I also hope to bring awareness to others that congenital heart defects are no longer just a childhood disease. With the help of the medical community, we are able to live well into adulthood now, but with that comes new challenges that we face. I plan on fighting and overcoming those obstacles every day!
Thank you so much for your support!
