The family and friends of Kristen Dangerfield are uniting to raise money to help with the volunteer efforts for the Vervet monkeys.

Kristen is raising money to travel to South Africa and volunteer with the Vervet Monkey Sanctuary.

Volunteering on the Vervet Monkey Sanctuary project is a great opportunity for those with an interest in primates to get involved with animal welfare/conservation work. Volunteers work directly alongside a world-renowned primatologist and will be trained in all aspects of primate care, including serving as "surrogate parents" to baby monkeys and introducing juvenile monkeys to existing troops at the sanctuary.

Volunteers must be prepared to work hard and experience working under the African sun with this threatened, intelligent and indigenous primate of Africa.

The rehabilitation centre is designed to handle orphaned vervet monkeys of all ages and more specifically designed to cope with large numbers of babies that become orphaned each year. Babies are easily assimilated into our programme and we try to get as many of them out of the hands of the public and into our care.

The money raised will go toward:
•Funding for the running of the rehabilitation Programme
•Full orientation and support from the project managers
•Accommodation and meals

What is expected of volunteers:
•Collecting, chopping and delivering food for monkeys
•Hands-on care-giving of baby monkeys, helping in our sickbay
•Monitoring and report writing of monkeys around the Sanctuary
•Cleaning monkey cages, washing feed bowls & plates and cleaning blankets
•Assisting with introductions and rehabilitation of new monkeys
•Assisting with basic medical practices and administering medications
•Clearing vegetation for fire breaks, looking after the volunteer village
•Construction of new enclosures for monkeys - building, painting, sanding, welding, fence-building, knot-tying, firebreaks & invader species eradication
•Cooking at weekends for volunteers
•Assisting with education outreach programs, such as Monkey Patrol
•Participating in the Vervet Census; you may even be trained to use a GPSucation outreach programs, such as Monkey Patrol
•Participating in the Vervet Centre
•Other areas you may help with are driving, fundraising, office work, or data input.
Duties commence at 7.00am and finish at 5.00pm (Monday to Friday). Staff members and volunteers are on call 24 hours a day.
