Give this talented young woman the gift of hearing! Alicia's current hearing aids are in need of immediate replacement.

Alicia Castro is a graduate of the CO-OP Upward Bound program and the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. She comes from a low-income, single parent, and inner-city household. She recently completed college and is now working towards a graduate degree while interning at local community agencies and participating in Americorps.

Alicia has been struggling with her hearing since age 9. She has a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (nerve deafness) and has been utilizing hearing aids to help her hear. Consistent hearing aid use has provided Alicia with the communication skills needed to function proficiently in today’s society. Hearing aids enable a person to not only hear better but to understand better, communicate in the presence of background noise (such as in the classroom, during group events, etc.), and to interact in everyday living situations.

Without hearing aids Alicia would not be able to function academically, professionally, and socially. Hearing aids have significantly improved over the years. The cost of digital amplification has also increased over the years. In order for Alicia to maintain her present level of communication she will need hearing aids that offer options in programming, noise reduction, and directionality. Alicia needs assistance in raising the funds needed to purchase new amplification.

She is a very dedicated and deserving young woman. I hope you will be able to help her in this fundraising effort. If you have any questions or would like to help in another way, please call 310-649-1016 and ask for Sharma.

You can also mail a check to: CO-OP c/o Dr. Sharma Henderson, 8929 S. Sepulveda Blvd., #400, Los Angeles, CA 90045. You can make the check payable to CO-OP and write "Hearing for Alicia" in the memo section.
