The family of John Elder are uniting to raise money to help with his battle against stage 4 esophageal adenocarcinoma (cancer).

December 2011, John was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal adenocarcinoma, a particularly lethal cancer. The cancer has made a 'home' in his liver, lymph nodes, sacrum and small areas in his lungs. Radiation and chemotherapy are and have been John's treatment plans. John has endured multiple rounds of radiation, four cycles of chemotherapy and several oral medications. John's follow up CT scans show the cancer sites have not gotten any larger but have not decreased in size as we had expected. Because of this, the doctor is changing the chemo regime to start on March 8th. John will be given a 4 hour chemo IV and then be on a 2 week oral regime.

UPDATE: April 25, 2012 -Since dad's last, more intense chemo treatments, it has not delayed or eliminated the advance of the cancer. The cancer in his liver is worse and dad is experiencing some pain/discomfort in this liver. We will be utilizing Hospice care for our dad. Dad is still home and getting around very slowly. We are taking it a day at a time with much encouragement from family and friends.

As you can imagine, this unexpected and unfortunate news has taken our family by surprise.
We don't know what the total expenses will be - but felt we had to get something started to alleviate the stress on John and Karen so that they can focus all of their energy and strength on winning this battle! The money donated will be used to help pay for medical expenses.
