This is the Bob Schmad living liver donor fund. Funds will be used for out of pocket expenses associated with Bob's generous donation.

Bob Schmad is my brother and my living liver transplant donor. I have Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), which there is no cure and the only treatment is a liver transplant. During the last 18 months my PSC became more aggressive and rapidly worsened to the point which I need a transplant as soon as possible. However, most people with PSC have to wait a long time to make it to the “top of the transplant list”.

The problem is that the longer someone with PSC waits for a transplant, the chances of developing liver cancer increases exponentially. All things considered my best chance was to receive a living donor liver. It’s complicated, but basically the donor has part of their liver removed and it replaces the recipient’s liver. Within a couple of months the livers of the donor and the recipient regenerate to full size.

Even though liver transplant surgery can be very risky for the donor and the recipient, Bob immediately asked if he could be my donor. I am grateful for my brother and his gift, but honestly I very worried for him. The surgery is something I NEED, but it’s something Bob has volunteered to do.

So, one might guess that you run off to the surgery room, take a number and there you have it. Well, it’s not that easy. First, Bob took on an intense exercise program. Then he endured mental and physical tests to include a liver biopsy. Speaking from experience that one is painful. Finally, it was decided that Bob was a match and we were accepted to move forward. We are scheduled for our procedure during the first week of June, 2012.

Not only is Bob putting himself in danger, but he does so with the support of his wife and their young son. In doing so, Bob is primarily covered by my medical insurance. When he eventually is released from the hospital he becomes responsible for follow up care and medications. Bob wont be able to return to work for about eight weeks, at least a few of those weeks will be unpaid. Please help me give back to Bob.

All money raised during this fundraiser will go toward Bob’s out of pocket expenses associated with his selfless act.
