The family of Carie Burkhart is reaching out to raise funds to cover medical expenses and related costs not covered by insurance.

Carie was diagnosed with atypical Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (aCML) on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. aCML is a very rare and difficult to treat form of leukemia. Carie's only option for treatment was a bone marrow stem cell transplant. She was admitted to the University of Chicago Medical Center and was undergoing workups and tests prior to the transplant process, was in a positive frame of mind, and in good spirits. Unfortunately, Carie suffered a devastating brain hemorrhage, a known complication of leukemia, early in the morning of Wednesday, May 2. She underwent brain surgery in order to minimize the injury, and spent the next three weeks in Neuro Intensive Care. Sadly, Carie's injury and the progression of her disease were too severe, and she passed away shortly after midnight, Wednesday, May 23, 2012. The sudden and profound loss of such a beautiful soul has impacted so many people, particularly her dear parents and family. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
