Appalachian Sustainable Development is raising money to continue its Learning Landscapes program for K-12 students in SW VA. LL creates outdoor classrooms on school grounds reconnecting students to their food source and encouraging healthy eating.

Learning Landscapes is a multifaceted experiential learning program that creates outdoor classrooms on public school grounds in Washington County, VA. The program not only builds and maintains the outdoor classroom areas at each school but also implements a fully developed curriculum that is tailored to each grade level and integrates the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Learning Landscapes curriculum seeks to reconnect children to their food source, encourage healthy eating, increase physical activity and nurture environmental awareness.

As standardized testing has become an evermore present part of the public education system, teachers are pressed for time and flexibility. Our goal is to give teachers and students a way to meet their testing goals using integrated subject matter, experiential learning and the natural environment. Learning Landscapes provides students of diverse learning abilities and styles the opportunity to flourish by catering to the whole child.

While programs that address these issues have only recently come to the forefront of public dialog, Learning Landscapes has been doing this work in Washington County for nine years. We currently work with over 2,000 K-12 students in eight schools each fall and spring. Our work is funded entirely through voluntary contributions and small grants. We do not receive funding from the school system.

Right now student gardens are growing throughout the county, awaiting our return in the fall. Students typically return in the fall to ripe gardens ready for harvest. We engage local chefs to teach students how to prepare the food they grow and the importance of healthy eating. Unfortunately this fall the very survival of the program is at stake.

Due to our current funding gap Learning Landscapes won’t be able to return to schools in the fall without your help. We’re asking you to be a part of this important work for children in Southwest Virginia.

What will my donation do?
Here are a few examples of how your contribution can help.

$50 can provide supplies for the Red, White & Blue Potato Harvest Celebration for 2nd graders at two elementary schools.

$100 can provide 10 weeks worth of healthy snacks for one of our afterschool programs.

$500 can provide materials and curriculum for the spring portion of the 3 Sisters Garden program at 2 elementary schools.

$1,000 can provide materials and curriculum for the Pollinator program (including planting a Pollinator Garden) for an entire year at two elementary schools.

$5,000 can provide funding for Project Bluebird for all participating students at five schools.

$10,000 can provide the Learning Landscapes program to every student, PreK-5th grade at one elementary school for a full year.

These are a few examples but every dollar counts and any amount is appreciated!
