The friends and family of Rose Raimondo are uniting to raise money to help with her battle against brain cancer. Please show your support!

I remember hearing a story years ago about an elderly man who threw his wife off a balcony because he could no longer afford to pay for her care as she battled cancer. I always thought that if you had health care coverage everything would be paid for if you ever got sick. Boy was I wrong.

Our story begins in December 2010; our mother woke up in the middle of the night from a seizure. Two days later she was in Thomas Jefferson hospital having her first brain surgery. When her tumor returned in the spring of 2011 she had her second surgery. Being in the room with someone when they hear the words “you have cancer” is surreal. Our mother did not cry. All she said as we walked back to the car was “I have cancer?” From there she focused on her treatment consisting of six weeks of radiation and months of chemo. I remember standing next to her in the bathroom when she lost her first clump of hair from the radiation treatment. She made a joke and we cried laughing. In the spring of 2012 we were told the tumor had come back again and we prepared for her third brain surgery. Days later she fell and broke her back. She spent a month in rehab in horrid pain and was eventually transferred to Thomas Jefferson for her third brain surgery. Surgery revealed that while tumor cells were found most of what we saw on the scans was radiation damage. We thought she would be home in a couple of days. What we did not know was this surgery would leave her immobile of the left side and bed bound. The doctors thought her mobility would come back but she has had a series of infections eventually winding up septic from kidney stones.

And now we find the gap in our healthcare care coverage. Unfortunately our mother’s case is so complex she requires around the clock professional care that is not covered by insurance. Our mother never took lavish vacations. She never wore designer clothes. She does not have expensive jewelry. She worked her whole life, usually two jobs to make ends meet. She lived pay check to check and any extra money she had went towards cards and gifts for others. Her greatest joy has always been to brighten the day of others by giving them something that made them feel special. If you know her then you can probably recall being on the receiving end of one of her well thought out cards or gifts….maybe for your birthday, at Christmas or maybe just because you had a bad day. She put you above her own financial needs in the hopes of bringing a smile to your face.

Our mother, Rose, is now in need of a gift from others. Our family would like to keep her home as long as possible. The cost for a live in aid and supplies has been staggering and beyond our financial means. Rose spent her life giving to others and now needs your help.

If you would like to give a gift to Rose, click the “Give Now” button and help us keep her home for a couple more months. If you would like to make a donation directly, please send an email to and we will provide you with details for sending a check.

Please don’t forget to visit Rose’s CaringBridge blog often to see her progress and offer your words of encouragement.
