I am a godmother to Nazahah, who has been handpicked by the Lower Eastside Girls Club to participate in a Quinceanera on May 22! Each of the young women is going to be presented with a $1500 check for her college fund. Please help us reach the goal!

Quinceaneras are celebrated in many Latin countries, and the tradition has been brought to the U.S. and incorporated into many Latino-American families here as well. They symbolize a young girl's transformation into a woman at the age of fifteen ("quince" in Spanish), and are often described as "coming of age" celebrations. In addition to the young woman's family members, "madrinas" (or godmothers) often play an important mentoring role. Unlike the traditional American understanding of a godmother as someone named at birth to care for one's children in case the parents pass away, a "madrina" can be any woman who cares about helping and supporting a young girl on her journey to womanhood.

For this particular Lower East Side Girls Club Quinceanera, I have taken on the role of a madrina to Nazahah. In addition to taking on a mentoring role, I have pledged to raise $1,500 for her. This money will be placed in a college savings account and will be available for their use when she turns eighteen.

Your monetary support will help provide Nazahah with an education---one of the most important and most powerful tools for their future success.
