We're uniting family/friends of Emma M. Kerr to show our support as she battles Breast Cancer. Please show your support for our good friend!

Embracing Emma
Welcome to the Giving Forward page for Emma Merchant Kerr. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 26, 2012 and we've put this page together to help her focus on her health and not worry about the financial struggles that are ahead.
Emma’s journey started long before her breast cancer diagnosis and she is not a stranger to this disease. As most of you know her husband was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2001 and unfortunately lost his battle May of 2003.  She said everyday no matter how bad Chris felt he would always say “It’s A Great Day to Be Alive” and these words gives her strength too. After Chris’s passing, the loss of his little sister Katie to an auto immune deficiency and his Father Ron to a long battle with pancreatic cancer it is almost unfathomable how this family still has faith but they do. Chris’s Mother Sue and Emma lean on each other for support and have a bond that will never be broken. Emma's diagnosis was devastating as it would be to any of us but she still finds a reason to smile every day.
Since July Emma has faced a several obstacles but took them head on. Egg Harvesting was not covered by her insurance but it was very important to her to know she would have the ability to have children someday in her future. Her insurance pays for some of her cancer treatments and surgery's but there a lot of out of pocket expenses that you just can't plan for. These expenses include things like co-pays, gas/travel/parking to and from Loyola and Northwestern downtown for treatment, and prescriptions. Cancer costs an average of $712 a month in out-of-pocket expenses for those who do have health insurance. No one is ever really prepared to handle this kind of expense on their own and so we are asking for your support. Northwestern University has graciously reduced the cost of the egg harvesting and has successfully retrieved several eggs. Her next step will be to immediately undergo a bilateral mastectomy followed by chemotherapy which will keep her out of work for some time.
Emma is a strong, loving, caring, giving, and a determined young woman. She never settles for less than she’s worth and has taught many to do the same. She is a best friend to many, a hard worker, and an inspiration. Emma has been so thankful for the messages, cards, prayers, love and support you all have been sending her and feels so blessed to have all you in her life. New and old friends have reached out to her and this has made her stronger so please know every prayer helps. Some of you may not know Emma but those who do, shared this page with you because she has touched their hearts in some way and are doing what they can to help “Pay It Forward”. Please extend anything you can to help Emma during this life changing battle and her “Pay It Forward” journey to help other young Breast Cancer Sisters to be able to have children in their futures as well. Please know the gratitude that we hold for each of you in your support of Emma Kerr. If you know anyone who would like to donate, any survivors, or other empathetic givers you might know please pass this along to help us obtain our goal. We are truly grateful for your love and support.
