Aliya's Fight against chronic pseudo-bowel obstruction.

Aliya Stephens is a 14 year old girl who has dreams and expectations she wants to meet in life, but there is one thing that holds her back at times. She is smart, beautiful and loved by her 3 sisters, 2 brothers, a mother, stepfather, and father. Not mention all our family members that cannot be with us all the time. In 2008 Aliya started to get sick and lose a lot of weight. For the first year and spending about 80% of her time, many procedures, and traveling between hospitals in Hartford Ct to Boston trying to figure out what was going on, in 2009 she was diagnosed with chronic pseudo-bowel obstruction. This is a disease that is rare and has no cure. This disease does not allow her to receive the nutrition she needs in order to stay alive. Over the years Aliya has started medications, and lives with a g-tub, gj-tube and a central line that goes to her heart. In 2011 Aliys had to stop eating by mouth, she gets all her nutritional needs through her central line called TPN. With many doctors and hospital bills our family has started to struggle. Since 2008 till now she has spent most of her time in the hospital and has tried to stay alive and healthy. She does not attend school and cannot do the things teenage girls her age does. Aliya has become septic four times and it has almost claimed her life not to mention the other countless times this disease has all most taken her.

In 2012 we started to go to Pittsburg children’s hospital to get a second opinion on Aliya receiving a transplant. In July of 2012 Pittsburg children’s hospital in PA has decided to list Aliya on UNOS for a multiveresal organ transplant. She is going to have a small intestine, stomach and colon transplanted when the time comes and is very costly. When the time comes my daughter and I will need to leave our family and move to PA for six months to a year leaving the rest of out family in Ct not by choice but due to my husbands job he can not relacate. When this happens I will lose my insurance and the medical and living expenses in CT and PA will all be on my husband. With everything that Aliya has been through she has not given up hope or the thrive to live her life as a normal teenage girl.

As you can imagine, this unexpected family crisis will take quite a toll emotionally and financially on our family. With your donations we will use it on medical bills and other expenses that will occur in Aliya’s medical care. We can't change this disease, but we can change the way we live with it and make every day the very best we can! Thank you all for your donations, support and most importantly prayers. We do believe in miracles and we pray for one each day.

Thank you for your kind words and donations,
Michelle Cicardo and Family
