Our brother was the top climber in Romania. Now he is battling a destructive disease that is crippling his entire body.

Clau's entire story can be read at This is just an overview.

When I first introduced my brother, Claudiu (Clau) to the climbing wall, I did not know that he will soon be a Romanian and Balkan climbing champion. But far worse, no one could anticipate that Claudiu will ever lose mobility in his hands and fingers and that he will ever be in danger of losing the use of all his joints and bones who are visibly bent at age 28!

Clau is an anomaly of sorts when you meet him since he is fairly quiet, reserved, kind, and borderline very shy. You would never know he is a very good climber because he doesn’t talk about it much, (like most do). Because of these traits you would never believe the strength or determination he exudes while on the mountain tackling tough climbs and overhangs.

His passion for climbing took him all over the world, and he brought Romania the highest place at a climbing World Cup.

His dreams were coming true.

Three years ago he was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in his hands, joints, and fingers. He followed a classic treatment recommended by the Romanian doctors. His pain became unbearable and he started coaching children while climbing less, in order to share his passion with others. Yet, because he did not respond to traditional RA medicine, he had to give up his passion due to continuous visible destruction of his bones and joints. At that time, it became his life's mission to find the cause that triggered his RA, and he took several trips to Hungary and England to meet with specialized lyme disease doctors. He was found to have borelia and several other co-infections, yet doctors in Romania do not treat RA and Lyme (its possible cause) at the same time. Due to the controversial diagnostics, Claudiu was left to battle on his own: he started a rigorous raw vegan diet based on Gershon's therapy, followed the Marshall Protocol, heavy detoxification, and a strong antibiotic treatment to fight the borelia bacteria that might have triggered its Chronic arthritis. Unfortunately destruction continued to take place at an even higher pace.

All his 6 brothers and sisters have put their money together so far but now we are forced to send Claudiu to several expensive clinics in Germany. This week he will be seen by several doctors and urgently hospitalized. He will undergo at least 5 apheresis ( blood separation) sessions that are about $10,000 at INUS Medical Center in Bavaria, and multiple IV infusions, RA medicine, and a costly lyme disease program at Borelium Centrum Augsburg- the highest regarded clinic for treating lyme. The remaining $10,000 will be used to cover the treatment, transportation, and hospitalization in Augsburg/ additional clinics. Claudiu is not covered by health insurance outside Romania ( a post communist medical system),and does not have any present or retirement benefits.

Our family jumped to the occasion and did our best to best serve Clau. My older brother designed a hyperbaric chamber for him ( see what it looks like on Clau's site), parents, though elderly, are spending long hours tending to his needs, and I, after months of negotiations, have persuaded clinics to allow Clau as a patient in their high demand clinics.

This is where you come in. We have to do everything to stop Claudiu's continous erosion that is crippling him visibly every day and pull up the rope so that he can reach his next summit. And we must do it before it is too late, by September, 30, 2012!  Thank you!

Please don't hesitate to see Claudiu's entire story at

P.S. Because Giveforward does not mail checks internationally, I (Teodor Miu) am the liason for Clau in the States. Please contact us with any questions.
