Our fundraiser is closing tomorrow, November 30, so please make any final donations to help this family pay off the cost of the medical flight for Amaia. Thank you. Laura

UPDATE 11-15-10: This is our final push to raise money for this amazing family. Please donate today if you have not already. Thank you so much for your help.

UPDATE 11-3-10: Bibiana and Amaia took a medical flight home on Saturday, October 30 and arrived safely in Spain. I have been in contact with Artiz, and the family truly appreciates all of your support in helping with this tremendous burden during such a difficult time. Any words of hope that you can give with your donation are cherished.

My name is Bibiana Etxebeste and I arrived in Columbia, Missouri 2 years ago with my husband Aritz Leonardo. Artiz has worked at the physics department of the University of Missouri for these last two years.

Recently, on August 28th of this year, I gave birth to our beautiful daughter Amaia. At the same time, my husband was lucky to find a research position at the University in our hometown of Bilbao, Spain. It didn't take us long to make the decision of moving back home, so we terminated our jobs here, sold the car and the few furniture that we had bought these 2 years. Then, we bought 3 airplane tickets to leave on October 28th.

However, last week our daughter fell really sick. Doctors told us that Amaia suffers from a fatal metabolic disorder, pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency (PDH), which means that she will live a very short life full of medical complications like brain damage, muscle weakness and many more horrible things.

Our health insurance ends at the end of October, which means that we have to leave to return to Spain to get Amaia universal health coverage. However, Amaia needs a medical transportation that at this moment we can't afford. We have booked a flight for this Saturday, October 30 to return and the flight is $84,000. We have spend a great deal of time looking for a charity that would be able to help us get a less expensive flight, but this is the best we have found because we have to have medical personnel on the flight for Amaia. Any help in trying to afford this flight is appreciated more than words can express.
