The family of Matthew Nelson are asking for financial assistance as he undergoes his battle with Lymphoma.

At the age of 24, Matthew, with his family proudly in attendance, walked to receive his college diploma on May 12, 2012. At that time, he had been suffering for a few months from an awful cough, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, and some voice loss which doctors thought was most likely related to allergies or a bacterial/viral infection. It wasn't until he saw a specialist who required him to get a CT scan of his chest that the real culprit surfaced.

On May 29th, 2012, Matthew was diagnosed with a rare form of Lymphoma. He has Primary Mediastinal Lymphoma. It has been found to be a mix of Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which is very unusual and medically challenging.

He recently completed his 2nd round in a series of 6 chemotherapy treatments. His last chemotherapy treatment should be sometime around the end of October 2012. Radiation may also be necessary after his 4th chemotherapy treatment if the cancer is not responding to chemotherapy alone but it can bring the possibility of even more complications, so it is not preferred. Removal of his tumor is not an effective option for curing his cancer due to the tumor being so near his heart and lungs.

Just a few months ago he was excited about starting a promising career and planning to run the Beach to Beacon road race in Maine this summer for the third consecutive year. Now his thoughts and goals have been forced to change dramatically.

About once a week myself or someone else in our family drives Matthew to the cancer center where he completes an array of medical tests in conjunction with his hospital trips for chemotherapy. He has had to quit his job and has been advised to not drive alone due to the side effects from his chemotherapy. He has good days and he has bad days as he battles to see beyond this disease.
We ask that you please help us with the hospital/treatment expenses that are accumulating and please pray for peace, wisdom, and healing for our precious Matthew.

Matthew currently stays with my parents so that he can go to one of the best cancer hospitals in the country. The hospital is 1 1/2 hours from my parents home. I commute about 5 hours to care for Matthew and his father travels about 11 hours to do the same.
All help raised will be used for Matthew's medical costs and related expenses not covered by insurance.

Any leftover funds not used will be donated equally to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Susan G. Komen (Breast Cancer) For The Cure Foundation.

Matthew would like to let you all know that he has started his own personal blog to keep people informed of his cancer treatments, of his thoughts during this time and to share his testimony and faith in God during this difficult season in his life.

You can follow it here at:

We thank you all very much for your support during this time.
I know that Matthew's huge heart, goofy contagious energy, and big smile also thank you.

God's blessings and His best to all of you,

Verity (Matthew's Mom)
