The Garris family is uniting to help raise money in the fight against Ray's colon cancer. Funds will be used for medical cost.

Help Ray Beat Colon Cancer!!

Full of energy and life, Ray is not about to let cancer slow him down. In March 2011 Ray went to the doctor with sever abdominal pain. When the doctors preformed a lower GI on him they found he was at 100% blockage due to a large tumor. He was then rushed to emergency surgery where they removed 2 ft of his colon. It was then that he was told he was in the end stages of stage III colon cancer and that 19 out of 25 lymh nodes they checked tested positive to cancer. Upon removal of the tumor, Ray spent the next 12 weeks undergoing extensive chemotherapy. A couple weeks after chemo, Ray was relieved when his petscan showed no more signs of cancer. He had kicked cancer's butt.

In April 2012 Ray went back for his normal 6 month follow up petscan, when he was handed with another blow. It was then that he found out the cancer had metastasized to his liver and 2 small spots on his lungs, now qualifying his disease to be stage IV. The doctor gives him a 20 - 30% survival rating after 5 years. Colon cancer may be a common type of cancer, but they estimate that a 5 year survival rate of stave IV colon caner is 8.1%. In other words, only 1 in 12 people will survive more than 5 years after diagnosised with stage IV colon cancer. Ray and his doctor are not giving up and fighting this head on for a cure. Ray just began another round of chemotherapy that will last for 4 months. They will redo another petscan in between to check and make sure the chemo is shirnking the tumor on the liver. Once Chemo is completed they will give him 1 month to let his body recover, then he will go to IU Medical to have the tumor removed from the liver. Once they remove the tumor, he will restart chemotherapy and will most likely have to remain on it for the rest of his life. We remain hopeful the he can beat the 1 in 12 odds.

Ray age 56, is a husband of 38 years with 2 daughters, 5 grandkids and 1 great grandchild. Anyone who knows Ray will tell you he is full of life and spirit. Despite his recent diagnosis, he still continues to take life head on, but fighting cancer head on is not cheap. We would like to spare him the stress of worrying about the never ending medical bills and cost of treatments, and let him focus on fighting his battle with cancer.
