Help fund Struggling Native American Student Enrichment Programs. Many programs will be cancelled if they do not receive funding.

AS HEARD ON WGN RADIO

Kyle, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation is home to families from one of the most storied Native American tribes, the Oglala Lakota (Sioux). While vibrant in spirit, this is one of the poorest communities in the country, with some per capita estimates as low as $7,772 per year in Shannon County (as of the 2010 census).

In response to the need expressed by Little Wound school administrators, we are raising money to help fund several endangered athletic and cultural education programs for students. These programs include baseball, golf, track and rodeo as well as programs that teach students about their traditional roots. Funds will be used to secure athletic equipment (uniforms, balls, gym shoes), fund travel to competitions and support Lakota language and cultural instruction.

SUPPORT THE RESTORATION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY: The Lakota could not legally speak their own language or practice their own ceremonies until 1978 under the Native American Freedom of Religion Act. This loss of cultural and spiritual identity has been devastating to the people. Funding for programs including Lakota language and arts, traditional dance and travel to powwows is desperately needed. Many Lakota students who go on to college cite cultural knowledge as one of the primary influences in their success, "knowing who you are" instills a sense of pride and a desire to give back to the community.

ONE PAIR OF SHOES MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE: To understand the needs of the community, it's important to note that many students own only one pair of shoes. School administrators have explained that the track season starts soon but many kids don't even try out because they can't afford shoes. We hope to be able to provide gym shoes to every child who wants to participate in a sport at the school. With the right equipment, each child has the chance to practice and compete, build confidence, improve their health and experience teamwork.
