The family and friends of Shauna Fitzpatrick are uniting to raise money to help teenagers who are fighting cancer.

Smiles for Shauna is a charitable trust that has been set up in memory of Shauna Fitzpatrick of Inis Mor from the Aran Islands in Galway, Ireland. Shauna was just sixteen years old when she passed away after being diagnosed for a second time with malignant melanoma. Initially diagnosed in 2008 at the age of 13, Shauna fought to survive. With intensive treatment and the support of her parents, Ann and Pat, her brothers, Thomas, Conor, and David, and countless other members of her family and friends, Shauna overcame this illness and ended treatment in January of 2010. Unfortunately, in September of 2011, Shauna’s cancer resurfaced. At this point, it was aggressive and had metastasized to several of her organs. While she gave it everything she had, cancer claimed her life on November 19th, 2011. The lives of her friends and family will never be the same.

A word that epitomizes Shauna is happiness. From when she was a baby, her curly, red hair and bubbly personality put a smile on everyone’s face. This never changed throughout her sixteen years as she continued to touch those around her and brought laughter and joy to their lives. Shauna had an amazing outlook on life, and she shared that with the people around her. She was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend. She lived her life in accordance with her four favorite quotes:

“Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.” -Johnny Depp

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential and fight for your dreams.” – Ashley Smith

“Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.” –Christopher Reeve

And finally, “If it wasn’t for the downside, having cancer would be the best thing and everyone would want it.”- Gilda Randner
On which Shauna commented, “That’s true. If it wasn’t for the downside.”

The downside that Shauna and so many other people are familiar with is an existence of sickness and ill-being. Shauna spent much of this time at Our Lady’s Children Hospital of Crumlin in Dublin, Ireland. It was there that Shauna received the finest treatment, and developed a second family of support. This family encompassed not only the doctors and nurses who offered exceptional care, but also the other teenagers who were each fighting a very difficult battle. While there, Shauna noticed that there was a play area for children much younger, but nowhere for her to spend time with other patients her age. These friends became one another’s support system; they could truly relate to one another.

It is in Shauna’s memory that we, her family and friends, aim to raise money to fund a recreational room in Our Lady’s Children Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland. We know that this is something that will make a difference in the lives of the children and teenagers who fight every day for a chance to survive.

We ask that you contribute in Shauna’s memory, and to help those who continue to face a cancer diagnosis. With sincere appreciation, Shauna’s family and friends thank you for any contribution that you can offer.
