Join the Gonzalez family as they try to put the pieces of their life back together.

On November 19, 2011 tragedy struck the Gonzalez family, and the heartbreak continues to ensue. Orleidys Gonzalez, a vibrant 24 year old who arrived from Cuba only 6 years ago went from being a student and hard worker, trying to make a better life for her humble family, to a critically injured patient in a hospital bed with an unclear future.

Being a horse rider and admirer since a very young age, Orleidys took advantage at a recent family party in a local farm to enjoy her favorite past-time and ride one of the horses. What followed after has been the surreal “movie” replaying in her family’s mind. While riding, Orleidys fell off the horse, landing on her head, and then was kicked by the horse while unconscious. Orleidys was left critically injured with severe head trauma.

She was airlifted to Kendall Regional Hospital Trauma Center where immediate surgery took place, a craniotomy. Swelling in her brain caused her to slip into a coma, where she has been since that day.
On November 30, 2011 Orleidys opened her eyes briefly but quickly slipped back into the coma.

The prognosis is unclear. Doctors have not been able to take her off a respirator, and are unsure of the damage caused by the accident. The neurosurgeon has told the family to have faith, she is young and strong, and that only time will tell.

This unexpected crisis has taken a toll on her family, emotionally and financially. Being their only daughter, Orleidys parents have not left her side. Coming from a humble line of farmers, the Gonzalez family is unsure of what their financial future looks like. Being a crucial part of the family’s stability, Orleidys’ condition poses an immense financial stress on the family.

It is in these times of need where we must to come together as a community to help each other. Any type of monetary assistance is greatly appreciated, as it may be the way this family keeps a roof over their head or a plate of food on the table. The road from here is a long one and any help this family receives is treasured.

Please keep Orleidys and her family in your prayers. We will continue to pray for her and have faith that she will get better.
