Chevra Kadisha / The Dr. Yitzhak Berger Eternal Kindness Fund

Dr. Yitzhak Berger, MD, Yitzhak Ben Tzila v' Eliyahu Ha' Levi, z"l, was a beloved Board Certified Urologist, who spent much of the last two decades as a partner in Associates in Urology of West Orange, NJ and practiced out of Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

Dr. Berger was known for the kind and gentle attention he provided to his patients and their families, making them feel respected and cared for.

Dr. Berger passed away at the age of 68 on October 18, 2015. In recognition of the devotion he showed to his patients, his family and friends established the Dr. Yitzhak Berger Eternal Kindness Fund.

This Fund has a dual purpose: to train community members to perform ritual preparation for burial, as well as to subsidize the costs associated with traditional preparation for burial, based on financial need.

A Chevra Kadisha is an organization of Jewish men and women who see to it that the bodies of community members are prepared with dignity in accordance with halacha (Jewish tradition).

The task of the this sacred mitzvah is considered one of the most important mitzvot (commandments) in Judaism, as tending to our loved ones is a favor that the recipient cannot return. Its work is therefore referred to as a chesed shel emet (an act of eternal kindness).

The fund will be overseen by a Board comprised of communal Rabbis, as well as lay members. The Fund's Board is in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) status. All donations received will remain in trust pending confirmation of this status.
