NU Dance Marathon raises money for the B+ Foundation, providing financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families.

Northwestern University Dance Marathon is the largest philanthropic event of the year. It brings together over 1,500 students, faculty, and staff to participate in the 30-hour dance-a-thon at the beginning of March. In 2011, NUDM raised $1,019,130 to benefit The Children's Heart Foundation. The beneficiary this year is the B+ Foundation, an organization dedicated to children’s cancer research:

"The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the life of 14-year-old Andrew who battled leukemia and sepsis before leaving us on July 14, 2007. Andrew’s B+ blood type became the perfect message – Be Positive – to reflect how Andrew lived his life and how he inspires others to do the same.

"The three main objectives of the B+ Foundation are to do good by: providing financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer through The B+ Family Assistance Program, funding childhood cancer research in search of cures and advancements in chemotherapy, and spreading the B+ message and trying to “Live Like Andrew,” which means setting goals and trying your best, showing affection, and being comfortable with yourself. Childhood cancer is responsible for killing more children and teenagers a year than any other disease, and currently only 3% of the National Cancer Institute’s annual budget funds childhood cancer research."
