Emergency change of plans. While Mica still needs hip surgery she now needs emergency disc surgery at UGA school of vet medicine.

My name is Mary. I left my domestic situation the day after Easter this year, and the only things I took were my dog Mica, my purse and a few clothes. None of my other possesions were important. Mica was the only thing I couldn't replace. I now have a safe place for us to live. The only thing we need now is for her to feel better so we can spend the next few years of her life celebrating, playing, and just have her enjoy being a happy, healthy spoiled dog.

When I ran from my home in April, my gorgeous German Shepherd, Mica, was placed in the care of a rescue center that helps victims of domestic violence by taking their pets until they can get to a better place. When I picked her up from the rescue, I knew she was recovering from pneumonia so I expected her to be a little weak, but she was hardly able to walk or stand at all. My vet thought Mica had a degenerative disease that would paralyze her and eventually claim her life. I was so frustrated that I got in my car and drove to the vet that had been treating her while she was in care of the organization. They didn't think she showed any signs of the degenerative disease but instead thought it was her hips. It seemed that no one knew exactly what was happening to my best friend.

By chance, I went to a place I had seen on the way from the vet. It is called Atlanta Animal Rehabilitation. I just walked in. I spoke with one of the girls who do physical therapy. She was kind enough to look at Mica's x rays. She told me she didn't think it was the degenerative disease either but she referred me to a great vet named Dr Filer.

We saw Dr. Filer and he also thinks it's her hips. We decided she needs an FHO, which is removing the ball from the ball and socket. I was relieved that there was a concrete solution. Still, the diagnosis isn't good - but if she has the surgery, Mica's lifespan will lengthen immensely.

Right now, I just want to focus on getting her the hip surgery and making her as comfortable as possible in the mean time. Her pain management includes accupuncture and a combination of several medications. After the surgery she will need underwater treadmill therapy. The cost of the surgery and therapy is $3200.00. I will continue to give to Operation Happy Hips as much as I can to pay for her surgery but I can't do it alone while I still struggle to put the pieces of my life back together.

The longer she goes without the surgery the longer she is in pain, and what is equally as concerning is the long term side effects of the medications. As with any medication there are good and bad effects. She looks at me as if to say, "Mom, what's wrong with me? I can't play like I used to." I just kiss her face and tell her that I will make her all better soon. And I truly have every intention of fulfilling my promise to her. Out of my domestic situation, Mica was the only household member who showed me unconditional love and she never gave up on me. I intend to show her the same. I thank God every day for the fortunes He has shown me through my furry best friend. Thank you SO much for listening to our story, and for helping us with your self-less donation. Every little bit counts!
