I am travelling to Nicaragua to volunteer with Bridges to Community during my spring break this year. Please help fund this amazing trip!

My name is Christina Frasca and I am a senior at Fordham University. This March, I will be trading in my spring break plans for a week-long service trip to Nicaragua. Nicaragua is located in the heart of Central America, and is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. I will be staying in Siuna, which is an indigenous city in the north east region of the country near the Caribbean coast.
During my week in Siuna, I will be working with the organization, Bridges to Community, to build homes for impoverished families, assist in a women’s clinic, as well as attend financial advising seminars to help poorer members of the community build businesses. All of my work will aid in the effort to stabilize the infrastructure of Nicaragua.
This trip is part of Fordham’s Global Outreach (GO!) program, established officially in 1990 by Fordham’s Campus Ministry. It is a cultural immersion and service program where Fordham students learn about various issues of social, economic, political and environmental injustice, while living a simple lifestyle that fosters communal and spiritual growth. GO! travels to many countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Ten students, including myself, will be attending the GO! Nicaragua project, which focuses on learning about the rights of women through a cross cultural lens. The organization, Bridges to Community, is a nonprofit service and cultural immersion program that seeks to develop personal transformation and cross cultural partnerships. During the course of our trip we will volunteer with Bridges to Community, as well as interact with university students in Nicaragua. By bringing college students together from two ends of the world, we will try to bridge the gap between the different cultures and relate to each other in more ways than one.
To prepare for this trip, my GO! Nica group meets once a week to reflect on why we are devoting our week to this cause, become well acquainted with the history of Nicaragua, and learn conversational Spanish. The girls in my group have become my refuge during my chaotic senior year. I am honored to be a member of such an outstanding team and cannot wait to get started on our work in Nicaragua.
As an aspiring international reporter, this trip will serve as the first step to adapting to cultures entirely unknown to me, while learning of the many injustices present, as well as aiding in ways to solve those issues. This trip is something I have wanted to take on since I began my college career at Fordham in 2007. Luckily, I am being afforded the opportunity to go my senior year.
In order for me to attend such a prestigious trip, I am responsible for an overall cost $2,100 to cover my expenses for the week. This cost includes air fare, housing, food, and transportation for the week. Each girl is required to raise the total cost of the trip on her own through fundraising events or letter writing. It costs $250 to sponsor me for one day in Siuna. Any donation made to help cover the cost of this trip would be the greatest gift and bring me one step closer to my goal.
I understand that many of us are struggling to stay afloat in the current economic state of the country, but I encourage you to help me and my teammates as we try to make a difference. We are fortunate enough to live with luxuries other people only dream about. That is why we are trying to improve the quality of life for those who can't help themselves. All donations are tax-deductible with proper paperwork, which can be arranged with the university.
Please know that a donation of any kind is most appreciated.
