Please join with the friends and family of Gary Swanson as we show our love and support for Gary in his ongoing battle against brain cancer!

Gary Swanson, along with Alberta his wife of 35 years, share a life and story responsible for touching, inspiring, healing, and encouraging the lives of countless people! About 30 months ago, during a lecture at Hazelden Treatment Center, Gary began to have difficulty speaking. Doctors diagnosed Gary with the most common type of brain cancer: Glioblastoma Multiforme Grad IV, an invasive type of cancer with rapid growth and a prognosis of 6 to 18 more months of living, with 12 months being the average.

Gary and Alberta have acted courageously while walking in faith. And praise God, history was changed! Over thirty months later, Gary is still with us, walking by faith and not by sight. The Swanson family have experienced many difficult and costly hardships: physically, emotionally, and monetarily. During the last thirty months, Gary had 2 brain tumor surgeries, went through many months of chemotherapy, and endured steroids and radiation treatments. Missed work, lost wages, costly co-payments, and many, many prescriptions caused a depletion of their savings accounts, checking accounts and life insurance policies.

In August 2011, Gary had some noticeable tumor re-growth affecting the motor skills area on the left side of the brain. Surgery was successful again. This time, the doctors also performed a Gamma Knife procedure: high energy rays precisely aimed at the tumor. Since then Gary has battled daily. Gary has lost use of his right arm and hand, has trouble walking at times, hard time doing stairs, dizzy spells, headaches, gets confused by small tasks, speech has been slowed, some days his vocabulary is limited to one word sentences. Gary gets very tired. Gary is in the midst of the trial of his life. While not understanding why or how come, Gary’s love for God has not wavered. He continued in faith, planning and lining up speakers for the May 2012 Spiritual Awakening Retreat.

Gary loves to help people and he tries to learn how to help people more effectively. He cares for people, just where they’re at. He always finds time for those who are hurting. Gary loves his 3 children & 6 grandchildren along with his 2 son-in-laws very much. Gary is a successful husband (Alberta says so), A fantastic father (ask Michele), and the best grandpa in the world (Tory says so), a promise keeper, a wonderful person. He cherishes his family and friends.

God has blessed Gary with many wonderful relationships in his life. Through these trials, many people have showed support and love to the Swanson family. God demonstrated His love by the caring and generous efforts of the people He has placed in Gary’s life. They have walked by faith and not by sight keeping their eyes on the prize which is Jesus Christ. Who is the author and finisher of their faith.

Gary has worked at Hazelden Treatment Center for 18 years. If God chooses to heal him on this side of heaven Gary will return to his job there. The Hazelden Foundation has been very good to Gary and his family during this process.

The Swanson Family would like to thank each and every person for all of the kind and supportive words, prayers, acts, gifts, and love in action. Donations to the “The Gary Swanson Family Benefit,” will help with Gary's continuing fight against brain cancer.

Thank You!
