All donations will be used toward an assistance dog that will alert me to dangerous blood sugar levels.

I have Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where my own body, for reasons unknown, attacked and destroyed the insulin-producing beta cells of my pancreas four years ago. Since my body can no longer make insulin, I must continuously infuse synthetic insulin through a cannula inserted just under the skin. This keeps me alive, but it often causes my blood sugar levels to change quickly and without warning.

Blood sugar that is too high results in an emergency room visit for DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). It also places me at risk for long-term complications such as heart and kidney disease. Low glucose levels keep me from being able to function and think clearly. When my blood sugar drops too low, I can go into a insulin coma (or worse).

Now that my daughters are in college, they won't be around as much to help. This means that an emergency situation could go unnoticed for long periods of time, which could be very dangerous. I am currently in the process of being matched for a service dog that will be trained to detect and alert for changes in my blood glucose levels. An assistance dog will provide me with a greater level of safety and independence since I usually can't detect when my sugar levels are off.

A medical alert dog is an expensive asset because of the level of specialization that is involved. The application, training, and matching process can take from 6 to 24 months. I'm looking at being able to get my dog by spring or summer, if all goes well. The training organization covers part of the expenses with grants and other funds, but I am required to raise about $5000 of the cost myself.

If you would like make a contribution toward my dog, I would be greatly honored. You can easily do this by clicking on the orange "GIVE NOW" button on this page. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution directly to ASSISTANCE DOGS OF THE WEST, just look for the blue link I've posted on the left side of this page. When donating directly to ADW, please be sure to make a note on their site that you are making the contribution "IN HONOR OF LISA LOFTIS" so your gift can be credited toward my scholarship with their organization.

I humbly ask for your assistance in this matter; every little bit will help!

Thanks,
Lisa
