Moxie, my beloved house rabbit, has had several health problems and needs help with surgery and ongoing medical treatments.

Moxie, my six year old sleek, loving and energetic Havana house rabbit, has suffered several medical issues this year.

It began with a routine trip to the vet to diagnose her teary eyes and enlarged dewlap. The incredible exotic specialists at North Alabama Cat & Bird in Hartselle, AL determined she had a Malocclusion of her teeth.

Her back teeth were sharp as sharks teeth (I saw them in an otoscope) and were irritating and cutting into the upper area of her mouth and sinuses, causing her eyes to weep.

This condition will require ongoing monitoring and potentially several filing treatments a year. After her dulling treatment to flatten out the teeth, I thought she was OK but within a few weeks she became lethargic, stopped eating and stopped eliminating.

Because this can be deadly for a rabbit in a short amount of time, I immediately took her back to the vet. After examination, x-rays, IV fluid treatments, stool softeners and other aggressive medicines she still is not producing stools on her own. My vet has diagnosed her with GI Stasis, thinks she has a serious intestinal blockage or could possibly have a twisted intense and needs surgery.

The situation with her enlarged dewlap is also to be determined and will require frequent medical visits to monitor the growth. A biopsy needs to be done to rule out cancer.

Since rabbits are prey animals by nature, they do EVERYTHING to not show they are hurt and in pain.  Knowing Moxie has been in pain has been very difficult for me.  Perry, her devoted mate and "husbun" would be lost without her.

I love Moxie so much and will do anything to keep her healthy and happy. I decided to try a fundraiser, as exotic health treatments and care is very expensive and I have a limited income. Any donations at all will be *greatly* appreciated and applied directly to my account with her health care provider.

If you want to know more about her, please contact me and I'd love to tell you more! Thanks SO much!

Update October 23, 2012 - 1:37 p.m.

Moxie has had emergency surgery this morning.  I will have more of the technical details soon, but she is now in recovery.  I was so afraid she wouldn't make it through the procedure but she is a tough bunny!

Dr. Strother said that she had fur and fecal matter impacted in multiple parts of her intestine.  One particular incision was so complicated that there is some risk of fibrosis as she recovers.

She will be staying at the clinic under their careful supervision until she can "go" on her own again.  She is having her pain managed with medications and IVs.

Here is her wonderful surgeon and advocate Dr. Strother:

We don't know how long she will be there but I am comforted she is in the best hands.  I am on pins and needles. :(

Update October 24, 2012 - 1:39 p.m.

I am so sorry to let everyone know that Moxie passed away this morning.  Her vets and advocates did everything they could for her and she had a difficult surgery.

We are feeling so much loss and pain over her, but also feel the love of our friends who embraced us during this time.

If you donated to Moxie, please let me know if you want to put the donation towards her still remaining vet and cremation costs, or if you'd like for me to cancel and/or refund.  I will be happy to do anything you'd like.

Thank you again for all your love and prayers!
