The family and friends of Shawn Ward are uniting to raise money to help with Shawn's battle against pancreatic cancer!

In July 2012, Shawn knew she wasn't feeling well but didn't know why - working full-time and raising 2 sons is a tiring job! But Shawn went from feeling tired to being jaundiced, and the whirlwind of medical testing and news had just begun.

On Monday, July 9, 2012, Shawn's medical journey started with blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound, quickly followed by an abdominal CT that showed a mass on her pancreas and spots on her liver. By the end of the week, Shawn was hospitalized and having a stent placed in the bile duct and a biopsy of the cancer taken.

The results showed cancer in the pancreas and liver - Adenocarcinoma, an exocrine cancer (fast moving, aggressive cell cancer), diagnosed at stage IV. The tumor on the pancreas is too large for surgery to be an option, and without treatment, she would be expected to have about 2 ½ months. Thankfully, Shawn chose to fight and started weekly chemo with a drug called Gemzar. It won’t cure the cancer but could shrink the tumor and give hope for a level of remission.

This fund is set up in response to those who have asked how to contribute to and support Shawn. As you can imagine, this has taken a toll on Shawn and her family, emotionally and financially. Shawn has been unable to work since July and is running out of vacation leave. She is in the process of being put on the leave donation program, but if she does not have enough hours, she will need to pay for her insurance premiums. Keeping insurance paid is critical at this time, as is seeing to the needs of her family.

Funds raised will be used for many aspects related to the effect the cancer is having on Shawn and her family, such as:

- Medical costs
- Insurance costs
- Memory making efforts (Shawn and family are taking a trip to Hawaii and Disneyland in September)
- Family expenses

Cards and well-wishes can be sent to Shawn at home - contact us if you need her address. Follow her treatment at Please also visit Katie's CaringBridge site: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/shawnmward.
