The iPad is nothing short of a miracle device for those with autism. Please help us give Charlie a voice for his 10th birthday!

This Wednesday, April 13th, 2011,our precious son, Charlie, will celebrate his 10th birthday. It is hard to believe that he is ten years old already. In many ways he is still so much younger. Charlie was diagnosed with autism when he was 18 months old. We had no idea what the journey of the last 10 years would be like when he was first diagnosed. There have been many tear filled days of worry and frustration and yet there have also been so many days of joy and celebration sprinkled in between. As a fellow parent of autistic child once told me, "the milestone celebrations for our kids my not seem like much to other parents, but to us they are all small miracles." I remember another coworker saying to me one time that his 3 year old would talk non-stop and that it would drive him crazy sometimes. He had no idea why I had tears in my eyes over such a statement. I feel like we are still waiting for him to talk at 10 years old, even though Charlie does have some limited language now. We have been wanting to get Charlie an iPad for over a year now. The school he attends has several in the classroom and he is allowed to use them at school only. IPads allow kids like Charlie to use educational software for learning and for voice output. We have had friends and family ask what Charlie would like for his birthday. Since parties are very uncomfortable for him and gifts are difficult to choose, we decided that this would be the best gift for Charlie that would have a lasting impact. If you feel compelled, your donations towards his gift would be greatly appreciated!
And next time your child is chattering non-stop, just think of Charlie and embrace the noise!
