The funds raised for Healthy Smile will help pay for significant, urgent dental care.

In 2000, after having my thyroid removed, I received radioactive iodine therapy for diagnosed thyroid cancer. I later learned that the treatment damaged my saliva glands. Putting aside the constant dry mouth, I had been warned that this could eventually cause me to have more than usual dental problems. While I visited my dentist regularly, and took care of my teeth in between visits, I found out during my recent visit that I have several severe cavities, required two root canals and two crowns. My previous dental coverage only covered $1000-that was eaten up by the exam, xrays and one root canal. It was not enough to get the crown-after the root canal; therefore my dentist placed a temporary crown until I could pay for a permanent one. However, that was over two months ago and it's not holding up well. I contacted a couple of dental schools in NYC/NJ areas, other emergency health clinics. But the costs involved with those were comparable to those my dentist has laid out. I am facing $6574 in total dental costs with all the procedures involved.

My previous fundraising efforts have been unsuccessful so I have reduced my fundraising amount to $4000 in hopes that I can at least get enough to cover a permanent crown, the additional root canal & crown and take care of the cavities. I am only 41 years of age and would like to avoid this situation getting worse. There is a recommended fluoride treatment that can be done to keep this from happening again, but I cannot begin the treatment until these existing issues are taken care of.
