The family and friends of Calvin Moore are uniting to help with his battle against multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. He's uninsured.

I drove my (very reluctant) grandfather to the emergency room on June 6 after learning he'd been referred there directly by his doctor but drove himself home instead that morning due to exhaustion. Once I got him there, he was admitted to treat his pain, improve his kidney function, and receive a blood transfusion for severe anemia. All of these symptoms presented themselves in the last 6 weeks - taking my grandfather from 100% to completely debilitated. He was initially expected to be discharged the following day once his pain was managed and he was rehydrated. Instead, however, my grandfather, Pepaw as he's known in our family, was unexpectedly delivered a probable cancer diagnosis: an aggressive multiple myeloma... one of the most expensive cancers to treat. My grandfather does not have insurance.

He's since had x-rays of his skull, spine, sternum, hips, long bones, a CT scan, a blood transfusion, and many tests to confirm the diagnosis. Tumors along the bone were found on his skull, spine, sternum, and hips. A bone marrow sample is next on his list.

We are currently working with a social worker to try to obtain some type of insurance coverage, but due to the price of medications he will begin taking once he is well enough, out-of-pocket costs will be high even if he obtains Medicare due to a gap in coverage.

I don't want financial burden to hinder Pepaw's treatment whatsoever, which we've already seen occurring with reluctance to fill his crushed vertebrate with cement (injections costing $1000 each). My grandmother passed away in September of 2010, and my grandfather's spirit is low and finances are tight. Any donation made, no matter how small will be appreciated more than you know! ALL MONEY received from giveforward will go directly to the individual to help alleviate treatment cost. Please keep my grandfather and family in your thoughts and prayers, and spreading the word would mean the world to me!
