The family and friends of Amanda Akin McRae are raising money to cover out-of-pocket expenses incurred in the treatment of scleroderma.

I have known Mandy Akin McRae almost my whole life. We used to get in trouble during naptime for talking, I used to spend the night at her house almost all the time, I was a bridesmaid in her wedding, and she has always been closer to me than a friend. She has been a sister; someone who would do anything for me.

A few years ago, she was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease called scleroderma ( The disease leaves her fighting for every breath and, now, she has to wear oxygen all day and all night. A few weeks ago, further unfortunate news came her way. A spot on her lung scan proved to be a carcinoma.

What doesn't surprise me at all is that my strong friend took this news in stride with a brave face and a "what is the next step" attitude. What does surprise me is that insurance does not cover all of the additional costs that are needed to keep this mother, social worker, wife, daughter, sister, best friend, and courageous soul alive.

Mandy is the most selfless person I know. In her work, she has done everything for the children she sees, she is the heart of her family (both her parental family and the one of her own making), and the first friend you call when you need any support.

The idea that she must spend any time worrying about paying bills when she should be focusing on her health is not something that I can bear. And, so I ask for your help in raising the necessary funds to pay her mounting medical bills or to provide support of another kind--kind words, childcare, or a home-cooked meal.
