Mary "Mama" Mshepa needs surgery to prevent cervical cancer - please help ensure her a quick and safe surgery in her home of Nairobi, Kenya.

Mary (Mama) Mshepa lives in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya - she was my host mother during my semester in Nairobi the spring of 2009 and she has been my family and friend ever since.

Mama is an amazing woman who has survived insurmountable challenges throughout her lifetime, including the murder of her husband, raising two daughters on her own, not to mention living with no running water or resources in the largest slum in Africa. Mama has been a frequent host to study-abroad students, and helps run two elementary schools for children living in the slums that she founded with a women's community collective. Mama worked thirty years for the same company and was forced to retire last year without pension. This may sound like a sad story - but throughout Mama never stops exuding optimism and continues to work toward a solution.

During a routine checkup last month, Mama was informed that she has potentially cancerous cells in her cervix and that she needs immediate surgery to remove the cluster or she is in danger of developing cervical cancer. The public hospital in Nairobi has lost her test results twice now and canceled two scheduled surgeries without rescheduling - Mama's last option is to find the money for a private hospital to perform her surgery where she will receive more comprehensive and expedient care.

Mama did the research - she found a family friend who is a physician at Aga Khan Hospital who can perform the surgery. With everything included (four-night stay, the surgery, medication and labor) the total comes to $3,000 (which is approximatly 300,000 Ksh). Mama has been advised to schedule the surgery as soon as possible due to the risks involved with cervical cancer - please contribute what you are able in order to ensure that Mama receives the surgery and care that she deserves and needs!

*I will be accepting donations on Mama's behalf because she lives abroad - all funds collected will go directly towards Mama's surgery*
