I'm dedicating my participation in the 2012 Boston Marathon to my nephew, Brian Collister, to help cover his medical expenses.

BRIAN RECEIVES HIS BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT ON MAY 30TH!!! PLEASE JOIN ME IN SHOWING YOUR SUPPORT FOR BRIAN BY DONATING $30 ON MAY 30TH.

Brian had been battling Crohn’s disease for much of his teenage years. During this time he was being treated by the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD). His condition got to the point where the only way for him to maintain a healthy lifestyle would be to take an immune suppressive Crohn's drug called Remicade. One of the potential side effects of this drug was lymphoma. The risk of developing lymphoma was very slim, and the benefits that Remicade would provide to Brian far outweighed those risks.

To our horror, Brian did develop a very rare lymphoma known as Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma, a cancer of the white blood cells. There are very few known cases in the U.S. Because of this fact, there are very few hospitals that treat this kind of cancer. He is currently being treated at CHKD, and CHKD’s doctors are consulting with Sloan-Kettering (NY) for a treatment protocol. It was important that Brian start chemotherapy treatment right away. So on Tuesday, March 6th CHKD installed a double port and administered chemotherapy.

Following his chemotherapy treatments, it is imperative that Brian undergo a bone marrow transplant. It can often be difficult to find a bone marrow donor, but Brian has been blessed that they found one! Sloan-Kettering is one of the only hospitals in our region that perform the kind of bone marrow transplant Brian needs, so that is where he is today. His bone marrow transplant is scheduled for May 30th, however he must undergo radiation treatment before the transplant. After his transplant, Brian will have to stay in New York for at least 100 days. You can learn more about Brian’s treatments and follow his progress by going to his CaringBridge webpage at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/briancollister.

As you can imagine, this unexpected family crisis will take quite a toll on Brian, physically, emotionally and financially. There will be expenses associated with Brian’s treatment that insurance doesn’t cover, like travel expenses and lodging for Brian and his caretakers. I had the fortunate opportunity of being able to run in the Boston Marathon on April 16th, and I ran in Brian’s honor. I am also using this opportunity to raise money to cover his expenses. You can sponsor me through this GiveForward website. If you would prefer to write a check, or give in other ways, please contact me at thebusheys@cox.net.

We know Brian loves his friends and family immensely and would love to hear from you. Please send any cards or well wishes to his home address.

Sincerely, Uncle Joe
