Our son, Ethan, is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and OCD.

He has been hospitalized four times. He has seen numerous doctors and had several out of home placements. Most recently he was placed at Alexander Youth Center in Charlotte, NC. He was released from there in February and now is in his second hospitalization since.

Ethan sees top rated psychiatrists and psychologists in the area. They continue to stress that Ethan can make it. Recently, both doctors, on separate occasions, indicated that Ethan is one of the most difficult cases they have ever seen. One noted that of all the difficult cases, Ethan is not only in the 1% of those, but in the 1% of that 1%.

He has struggled all of his life. Ethan's behaviors have made it nearly impossible for him to live within our home, and he was recently turned down by a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility located in Asheville, NC. We are in the process of trying to find an treatment center for Ethan, one with which he and we are happy. We want to get him out of the hospital and we have seen therapeutic placements that can cost up to $10,000 per month. Previously Ethan attended a therapeutic boarding school for 9 months at $5,500 per month. Only a generous family loan allowed a stay of that length.

We have an 8 year old daughter to keep safe and to provide for. We desperately do not want Ethan to end up institutionalized for the remainder of this life. He is funny and smart and likable almost all of the time. It's those other parts that have ruled all of our lives for over 13 years.

If you know anyone who has experience dealing with mental illness, you know how difficult it can be to find help.
