This endeavor is to bring support to Devon Hulett through raising funds, volunteer help and prayer.

On the evening of April 28, 2011, Devon attended a lovely performance of her niece in San Rafael. As she was leaving the concert, walking to her car, she was violently struck by a car that had not seen her on the crosswalk. She was thrown in the air about 20 feet and landed under a parked car. Her left leg sustained compound fractures, her artery was severed, and she had many contusions throughout her body. As she lay on the street, her family members there for the concert also, called for an ambulance and she was rushed to Marin General. After her injuries were assessed, immediate surgery was warranted to stop the bleeding. This surgeon was the first to say he was not sure her leg could be saved. Devon, expecting to leave with a cast that night, now understood she faced an entirely different situation.

The surgery to repair the artery was successful. Devon was then transferred to Stanford Medical Center for her next surgery by an orthopedic surgeon specializing in complex surgeries for severe injuries. He initially walked into the room of this very frightened patient and said, “Are we amputating today?” Not the question one should have to answer while still in shock from an accident. The doctor indicated that if she did not choose amputation, she could expect multiple surgeries and constant pain in a long term recovery for 12 – 18 months, with no guarantee that her leg would be functional. Devon made the brave choice to fight to keep her leg.

Devon awoke from her second surgery to find 16 steel rods and pins implanted through her flesh and bone to correct bone positioning and help her bones mend properly, stabilized by outer metal rings, called halos. This was the first bone surgery, since then two more have occurred, including an incredibly painful bone graft from her hip. Six months of this journey has past and Devon has gone from being bedridden, to wheelchair bound to walking with the aid of a walker. Her daily experience is still constant pain as she copes with the external fixator but there is much to be grateful for in this healing process. She is thankful and touched by the outpouring of support from friends and family during this time. Many people have commented on her continued positive attitude, bravery and strength.

Those of you who know Devon have enjoyed her warm, caring ways and quirky sense of humor. She has been supportive of so many people along her life’s journey. This is now our opportunity to show her how much she means to us. We, Devon’s friends and family, have begun this effort so she can receive support in various ways. Monetary donations are greatly encouraged to assist with daily living expenses, prescriptions and bills. Services that you can provide are welcomed, i.e., trips to the doctor, bringing in food, caring for her animals when needed, trips to the store, etc. And most of all, Devon covets your prayers, as she is trusting God daily to work everything out in this long term recovery.
