I will be joining on an expedition with other cancer survivors to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro on July 25th. I am hoping to raise money to help cover some of the expenses of the trip and to support

My name is Brian Novak. I live and work in beautiful Boulder, CO. Last year, at the age of 36 I was diagnosed with stage 3 Colon cancer. I had been dealing with a lot of pain and feeling bad for months. It was difficult to get a diagnosis. Finally, after having a colonoscopy the tumor was discovered. I was rushed to Boulder Community Hospital where I underwent surgery to remove a tumor along with 18 inches of my transverse colon. Five weeks later I began 12 rounds of chemotherapy. Prior to that at the age of 27 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes leaving me with a lifelong condition of multiple daily insulin injections and blood tests. Diabetics are twice as likely to get cancer of the liver, pancreas and uterine lining. The risk of colon, breast and bladder cancer is 20 to 50 percent higher than non-diabetics.

On July 25th 2010, I will be joining the Cancer Climber Association and Sean Swarner (first cancer survivor to climb Everest) on an expedition with other cancer survivors to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. My goal in climbing Kilimanjaro with the Cancer Climber Association is to take on one of the greatest physical and mental challenges of my life second only to cancer. I also want to encourage other cancer survivors and diabetics to accomplish things in their lives they thought were maybe not possible because their diseases. If I were complete the climb, I am fairly certain that I would be the first diabetic cancer survivor to climb one of the seven summits. The expedition is taking place approximately one year since my completion of chemo. I think this will be an excellent way to celebrate life after cancer. All donations to this campaign will go directly to the Cancer Climber Association and are tax deductable. For more information about the CCA please visit . Thank you very much for your support! Now the training begins! Wish us luck!
