Support the Lower East Side Girls Club First Annual \"15 Anos/Sweet 16 Celebration Program\", which aims to mentor young teenage girls and set them on the right path to graduate from high school and attend college.

Dear Friends and Family:

This year I decided to get involved with the Lower East Side Girls Club because I firmly believe that if we help young girls and women realize their potential, we are one step toward helping improve the state of our world.

Founded in 1996 by a diverse group of Lower East Side women, the Lower East Side Girls Club was created primarily to address the lack of social programs available to girls and young women living in this downtown neighborhood of Manhattan. This year, they launched the First Annual 15 Anos/Sweet 16 Celebration Program and recruited women, like myself, to serve as a young girl's Madrina (Godmother). The idea is that this milestone should not only be rewarded with a celebration, but it should also be taken to the next level and used as a way to mentor and empower girls to seek a better lives for themselves and not drop out of school or become a teen mom.

I have had the pleasure of being paired with a lovely 14-year old Dominican girl named Jennifer Salcedo. She is the youngest of 5 children and lives in the Lower East Side attending Henry Street High School. It's not the best school in the city and the school has already received threats that it will close its doors. However, Jennifer is soft spoken, smart and wants to go to college to pursue her dream of being a pediatrician. And not only that but she is absolutely sweet !

Here is where I need your help: As part of my commitment, I need to raise money to help jumpstart Jennifer's college fund. The money raised will be managed by the Lower East Side Girls Club. At the same time, as Jennifer continues to go to high school, she will learn financial responsibility, how to save for college and how to apply to 4-year universities, etc.

It's a great program that I hope all of you will consider supporting. Whether it's $20, $50, or $100....anything you can contribute will help me reach my goal but more importantly, help Jennifer.

I have 1-month to raise money so I hope you join me, and I will continue to provide you with updates on this program.

Lots of love and thank you in advance.

Finally, I leave you with this quote from Kofi Anan, then UN Scretary-General: "It is impossible to realize our goals while discriminating against half the human race. As study after study has taught us, there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women."
