The friends of Pat and Kate Neumeier are uniting to raise money to help with medical expenses and to give them some quality time together.

KATE IS DIAGNOSED

On July 14, 2010, Kate had a biopsy performed on a mole in the middle of her back. Nine days later, she and her husband, Pat, received the news that changed their lives. Kate was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma (skin cancer), third stage, Clark’s level IV. This is a very serious life-threatening diagnosis, so Kate had surgery on August 19, 2010 to remove the tumor, the surrounding “margins,” and several lymph nodes. After that surgery and an MRI, a PET scan and a CAT scan, it appeared all the cancer was gone; Still the oncologist recommended that Kate begin chemotherapy-interferon just to be sure it was all removed. Kate and Pat talked it over and made a very difficult decision not to do the chemo.

Then three days prior to Kate’s lymph node surgery, she was admitted to the hospital for 10 days with cellulitis. After the doctors tried every antibiotic they knew about, she was released. It took another six weeks for recovery. Kate and Pat knew their bills were mounting and, needless to say, they decided to cancel the surgery.

MEDICAL EXPENSES ADD UP

Well, the bills started coming in and hit the $60,000 mark. Kate and Pat used all their savings, cashed in their retirement accounts and sold all Kate’s jewelry to pay down some of the debt they owed out-of-pocket. They applied for disability twice, and were turned down. They’ve applied for bankruptcy, yet they were told they were not in debt enough to qualify. In addition to Pat’s haircut business, Kate works a part-time job at an office furniture store and even started her own side business making and selling gourmet jams, just to help pay their debts.

THE CANCER IS BACK

Now, added to the news of their increasing medical bills, which are currently at $32,000, is a new blow; Kate’s cancer is back. Surgery will not prolong Kate’s life. She is working with her doctors to control her pain. Although Kate and Pat ask that you pray with them for a miracle, the expectancy of Kate’s life is less than a year.

HELP FROM FRIENDS

This is where you can help! We want to help Kate and Pat raise enough funds to pay off their medical debt with a cushion in funds to cover 2 to 4 weeks of Pat’s income (so he can close his self-operated business) and an extra $5,000 to give them the opportunity to maybe go on a trip and spend some quality time together, now.

Thank you for giving prayerfully,

Friends4Kate
