Help 7th Grade Green Academy students at Utterback make good energy choices on a 3 day camping trip in the Tucson Mountains.

At Utterback Magnet Middle School for the Arts we believe that students learn best by doing. It is part of our Project Based Learning approach to teaching.

Our students have the opportunity to travel to the Camp Cooper Educational Facility in the Tucson Mountains. Students will be participating in the Sunship Program. This program is designed to work with students as they transition from childhood to adulthood and are asked to make wise energy choices.

Students will be camping for three days and two nights. Throughout their stay they will be allotted a certain amount of "sun dollars". Every time they consume some type of energy, they will pay with their "sun dollar". The kids will begin to experience how their everyday energy choices impact the world around them.

Upon their return from the Sunship experience, students will continue to explore what it means to live a sustainable lifestyle in the form of a "quest". They will interview members of the Tucson community about their energy choices and complete their quest through interviews and community service projects.

Camp Cooper is an educational facility in the Tucson Mountains that is run by the University of Arizona and Tucson Unified School District. Check out the history of their facility and their commitment to educating Tucson students about the unique ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert.

The cost of the project is solely for the cost to feed 40 students for three days and the transportation.
