GLOBAL OUTREACH AT FORDHAM

Global Outreach is a program under the auspices of the Office of Mission and Ministry at Fordham University. Global Outreach is a cultural immersion and service program where Fordham students learn about various issues of social, economic, political and environmental injustice, while living a simple lifestyle that fosters communal and spiritual growth. We send teams of students consisting of approximately ten students, one student leader, and one chaperone to live, work, and learn with partnering organizations in approximately thirty locations throughout the United States and countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Global Outreach teams travel to collaborate with our partnering organizations during winter, spring, and summer break. The projects vary in both length and scope. Some projects are one week in duration while others are more than three weeks long. In addition, some of the projects focus on service related experiences such as working with Habitat for Humanity in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania while others are immersion experiences such as living with host families in Lima, Peru. Regardless of its focus, each project shares the ultimate goal of creating solidarity, learning about issues of poverty and injustice, and connecting the local with the global.

Project Description:
The team partners with community and grass roots organizations in Immokalee, Florida around issues of farm workers' rights, fair wages and food justice Students live and work with our partnering organizations and meet representatives from the farm worker community to gain a deeper understanding of the movement just wages and human work conditions. The group works with Immokalee Housing and Family Services, Guadalupe House, and Friendship House in various programs -- an after school program, a computer training course, a shelter, a soup kitchen and an early beginnings program. The team also visits the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to learn about advocacy and organizing efforts for the rights of the people who harvest our food. The team also has the opportunity to experience some of the natural beauty in the surrounding areas and in the Everglades National Park.

"GO! Florida was an amazing trip which opened my eyes to the social injustices in our country today. Our team met the migrant workers and their families who pick tomatoes in Florida for our local supermarkets and restaurants, which made me begin to think about how my daily actions affected others. It was so inspirational working with the Coalition for Immokalee Workers and seeing the progress they have made with the Fair Food Act with large supermarket chains and fast food chains nationally. The warm, welcoming community showed that change can happen through standing together against injustices." -Catherine McAloon FCLC '13
