To raise money for Gavin Sima who has Lymphoma and who is having a bone marrow transplant secondary to his myelodysplastic syndrome.

What started out as thinking “typical boys will be boys”... getting bruises from playing, turned into turmoil for the Sima Family. Late September, early October 2011, Anita Sima took her son, Gavin, to the doctor for unexplained bruising. Blood counts showed Gavin’s platelet count was 6. A quick call from the doctor to Helen Devos Children’s Hospital ended up with more testing. The test results finally concluded Gavin was diagnosed with having Lymphoma, a devastating diagnosis that occurred while Anita was pregnant with her daughter. Throughout the following months, Anita and her husband Mike made multiple trips back and forth from Muskegon to Grand Rapids for continued appointments, and chemotherapy for Gavin. This made a huge impact on the lifestyle change for not only Anita, Mike, and Gavin, but his twin brother Carson, and older brother Elijah as well. Months of treatments have gone by. Anita and Mike and the boys welcomed the addition of their daughter, Julianna to their family in January 2012. It seemed as if life couldn’t get any better. On April 4, 2012, Anita announced more exciting news for their family. Gavin was finally in remission! Prayers seemed to be answered. They thought they were finally seeing the light at the end of a dark tunnel. Who knew that only a couple weeks later they were going to be given such devastating news…. Gavin was now also diagnosed with having Myelodysplastic Syndrome. They were told that this meant that his bone marrow is unable to make usable blood cells, such as platelets. The treatment for this syndrome is a bone marrow transplant. Due to the time off that Anita had to take during Gavin’s first treatment phase and having a baby, her FMLA is depleted. She now has to wait until September 2012 to renew her FMLA. She, being the insurance carrier for the family, needs to continue to be able to work to provide the needed insurance to pay for Gavin’s continued testing, treatments, prescriptions, and bone marrow transplant. Therefore, Gavin’s transplant is on hold until they are able to move forward. Gavin will have to be hospitalized approximately 6 weeks prior to the transplant as well as 6 weeks after the transplant. This means Anita and Mike will be missing lots of work in order to be there and care for their son as well as not forget their other children. The costs of expenses will continue to rise… gas money traveling back and forth; meals to provide for the family as they will be on the go; uncovered costs by the insurance, including prescriptions. These costs add up and we are looking to our community for help.

Gavin had a bone marrow biopsy yesterday that showed no signs of healing/no signs of his bone marrow having the ability to make ANY blood cells. He is getting every other day packed red blood cells and daily platelet transfusions. We found out today that he needs the transplant ASAP. Now we are fighting with the insurance company because they don't cover transplants at DeVos. The...y cover at Mott's in Detroit, a children's hospital in Chicago and another in Minneapolis. We are planning on appealing when the denial comes through and hope they make an exception given the emergent need for the transplant.

Will be looking for help!!! This means time away from the family/boys... probable need to take baby Julianna with them due to feedings and such... will need help with childcare and possible need for someone to travel with them to help with the baby!

Please continue the thoughts and prayers for Gavin and his family!
