A fund to help raise money for the Smith family to assist with/offset expenses not covered by insurance and to get Jacob an iPad.

Jacob “The Fighter” Smith was born 111 days premature on September 4, 2003 weighing 1lb 3oz. His eyes were still fused. His ears did not have cartilage. He spent 8 weeks on a ventilator and an infection required over a dozen blood transfusions. After 4 months battling through infection, surgeries and other setbacks in the NICU, he was strong enough to come home.

Jacob’s first few years were rough. Because of his early birth, Jacob developed an eye condition (ROP) that would eventually take his vision. He also suffered many respiratory illnesses because his lungs were so fragile. Many trips to the doctor, several hospital stays and a few surgeries occurred in those first years.

When Jacob was 5 years old, he was diagnosed with moderate-to-severe autism. It was an expected diagnosis as his parents saw the signs for a while.

Throughout their journey with Jacob, his parents Brett and Trish always had coverage for his medical expenses. But as Jacob grows and his needs increase, they struggle to provide the very best for their son.

The Smith’s burden’s deepened when Trish was diagnosed with cervical pre-cancer in 2008. After several surgeries and biopsies, she was given a clean bill of health. Then the BILL arrived. Today, four years later, they are still paying for Trish’s medical bills.

Brett and Trish made several attempts to get SSI/Medicaid to help with Jacob’s needs, but were denied due to income. In the summer of 2010, Trish, who was two months pregnant at the time (with Owen, now 17 months), lost her full time job. They re-applied for SSI/Medicaid but were denied because Trish was receiving unemployment. Later in the fall of 2011, the Smith’s moved from Wichita,KS to Kansas City for Brett’s job. Once they got settled and Trish’s unemployment ended, they applied for SSI again. Again, they were denied. This time because they own their home in Wichita and rent a home in Kansas City.

The Smith’s have all but given up on receiving any state/government aide for Jacob. They cut corners where they can- no cable, no house phone, eating out less, no vacations, or date nights.

Brett and Trish want to provide everything they can for their boys and could use a little help. All of the funds raised here will go toward Jacob’s needs- diapers, wipes, Pediasure/Dietary needs, communication devices/switches and maybe an iPad.

Please help us support the Smith’s and Jacob! Thank you!
