Please join us to help raise money for my sister Loann Fernando with her battle against breast cancer.

“Mom...will you be there for my next birthday?” was the wish that came from my 6-year-old son after I told him that mom was very sick and might die. I never thought I would have to say those words to my son. As a wife and mother of two young boys I cannot imagine a day without being with my family. On August 14, 2009 my life drastically changed when I was diagnosed with stage 2 triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Approximately 15% of breast cancer is triple negative which is the most aggressive and difficult cancer to treat affecting young women under the age of 40.

After undergoing a lumpectomy, enduring 4 months of harsh chemotherapy, and almost 2 months of radiation I was filled with a glimmer of hope that I have won the battle. But my dreams were quickly shattered on February 2, 2011 when I discovered a new tumor in my neck. A later CAT scan confirmed not only that the cancer had recurred, but that it had spread to the chest wall involving lymph nodes.

My oncologist and a TNBC specialist at UCSF hospital conveyed that I now have stage 4 breast cancer. Their suggestion to my already difficult ordeal was higher dose chemotherapy which would not cure me, but might extend my life for up to two years. I could not accept this prognosis and treatment plan. My dream like every mother’s dream is to see my children growing up, attending college and building their own families. I had no other choice but turn to alternative medicine, especially since conventional therapy did not work the first time.

Reinvigorated with a renewed sense of hope and determination my research led me to several highly successful clinics outside of the US specializing in various alternative treatments at a costly price. Examples of these treatments include intravenous high dose vitamins, insulin potential therapy, hyperthermia, stem cells, detoxification, etc. The goal of the therapy is to build up the immune system so that it can attack the cancer. After much research, I’ve decided to receive treatments at Immune Therapy Center in Mexico for five weeks. This decision was the easy part, unfortunately, all medical costs and related expenses would not be covered by my insurance. As a result, my family and I have exhausted all of our savings to pay for these treatments. Along with the expensive clinical cost there are many expenses such as hotel accommodations in Mexico, daily taxi rides to the clinic, and medications. We’re unable to refinance our home to pay for the treatments because the property is underwater. Moreover, I’ll need to return to the clinic for additional treatments especially within the first year, and on a regular basis if continuing treatment is needed thereafter. Each trip is estimated to cost thousands of dollars.

I believe in miracles and that there is hope in alternative medicine. Every day is more meaningful, more precious, appreciating every moment knowing that today is all I have to make a difference. Your donation will not only affect my outcome but also the lives of my children. Please consider donating any amount as no amount is too small.

We are forever grateful for your prayers and generosity in helping me live a life of hope.
