Please help Cyndi Hawk adjust to her new environment in a long-term care facility by helping her family purchase a TV for her room!

Cyndi was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in September 2011. We learned at the time that the disease causes nerve cells to gradually waste away and die, resulting in muscle weakness, severe respiratory distress, and, eventually, paralysis and death. Unfortunately, the disease has progressed much more quickly than anyone anticipated.

In early January, Cyndi was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton with acute respiratory failure because her lung muscles had become too weak to support full, deep breaths. She had to have an emergency tracheotomy and was placed on full ventilator support. Cyndi spent a month in St. Joes, healing from surgery and gradually gaining back her awareness and speech capabilities. During her final week in the ICU, we're happy to report, she was munching away at her favorite foods (Manny's fried chicken) and determinedly chatting with us by pushing air up around the cuff in her tracheotomy tube.

But there's still a long road ahead. This week Cyndi was moved to a sub-acute facility in Sacramento, fifty miles away from her home and family in Stockton. For the next few months, she'll work with therapists to improve her physical mobility and hopefully ween down on the ventilator. While she's doing that, she'll need to keep her spirits up and stay connected to the outside world.

We have no idea at this point how Cyndi's medical costs will shake out with insurance, but there's one expense that will make an immediate and tangible difference in her morale: a TV. The facility can only supply a small, 13-inch set that Cyndi cannot see from her confinement in bed. Her family would like to buy her a 22-inch TV that we can mount to wall and which she can view easily from bed. We would very much appreciate any amount you can give toward helping Cyndi to feel as much at home as possible in this new facility.

Thank you and we will post updates soon!
