To raise money for the continued post-stroke, post-trauma rehabilitation of Uma Nithipalan.

On January 31, 2007, just one month after accepting John's proposal for marriage, Uma suffered a burst brain aneurysm and subsequent massive stroke. She was 27. Prior to this she had been pursuing her dream of being an actress here in L.A. She was in several plays, had a good agent, done a couple of commercials and short films. She had also started to see a good therapist to help her with childhood and young adulthood traumas, including several years of sexual and physical abuse by her mother, and a brutal rape in her early 20's. Despite intensive physical and speech therapy for the last 5 years, and really terrific gains in stroke recovery, she still cannot open or use her right hand, nor can she functionally read or write. She has just over half of her brain remaining. These losses, coupled with her prior traumas, and the brain injury have pushed her into a deep depression. The escape she found and chose was alcohol. Her relationship to that is lethal. She is now at the Refuge in Florida. A healing place specializing in trauma resolution and substance abuse. They were one of only three facilities in the U.S. that would accept Uma. Most turned her down due to her reading and writing deficits. Our family has raised over $30,000.00 so far but, because of her cognitive injury, she requires more time than most others. She is doing very well, is highly motivated, wants healing and sobriety. Please watch the video of Uma on this site. We just need a little extra help for her. Thanks so much for reading this. All my love and gratitude. John.
