Welcome to the Mended Hearts Fund. We are raising money for RJ Polachek to help ease the burden of medical costs not covered by insurance.

I would like to introduce you to Robert Joseph Polachek III or, as we know him, RJ. RJ is 8 months old and was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called DiGeorge Syndrome which brought with it a condition called Tetralogy of Fallot (pronounced fuhllow). This condition caused his heart to have several defects including the absence of a valve.

RJ's first open heart surgery turned out to be a marathon as he threw the doctors several curve balls while they were in there. The doctors decided to patch the hole where the valve was supposed to be as opposed to putting a new one in. After two weeks of not being able to pull the breathing tube out they discovered that RJ's diaphragm had been damaged during the surgery. They went in and repaired the damage but it was decided that they had to go in and put the valve in.

The second open heart surgery happened exactly three weeks after the first one. The doctors were able to successfully put the new valve in but he still faces yet another challenge. Being sedated for almost a month has led RJ to become dependent on the medicine they are giving him. So much so that they have to carefully wean him off before he will be able to start trying to breathe on his own.

RJ is a true fighter and we all have faith that he will get out of there and grow up to be a happy, active little boy.
